Adding Fabric to Your Layout

I wanted to share a layout I created using the For Always paper and textiles.  I created this layout a few months ago as part of my application to teach at this year's Extravaganza at Close To My Heart's Convention.  I had the wonderful the privilege to teach last year and had hoped to get another opportunity again this year.   I got word on Monday that I was not selected this year.  They have changed the teaching format this year and only chose 18 teachers as opposed to 32 that they had last year.   I know the competition was stiff.  I've seen the artwork by other consultants and they just blow me away with their creativity.

I had mixed feelings about not being chosen.  Yes, I was disappointed but I have to admit there was a part of me that was relieved.  This May my youngest daughter graduates from High School so this is beginning to be very hectic for me as I prepare for her graduation and party.   Those that are chosen to teach will only have about two weeks to get their art work ready for convention so I'm sure I would have been under major stress.

I'll try again next year and maybe by then I will have learned to step up my creativity and come up with some really out of the box creations.

I submitted two layouts - the first of which I'm sharing with you tonight using my daughter's senior pictures.

For my layout, I chose the Slate Cardstock as my base pages.  The black piece with the white writing is one of the For Always textiles.  I cut the pieces down to the size I wanted and then I frayed the edges by pulling the threads out one thread at a time. To get a nice even fray all the way across, it is important to make your cuts as straight as possible.  I actually pulled out my sewing machine and stitched these pieces to the base pages.

You can see the frayed edge a little better in the picture to left.

I also used the For Always textiles to create fabric flowers.  The small twisted flowers were created by cutting a long piece of fabric (about 12") by 3/4" wide.   I tied a knot in one end and then twisted the fabric and rolled it around the knot adhering it to a 3/4" circle piece of cardstock.  I used liquid glass which dries very fast and holds very well.

My bigger fabric flower is 3 layers.  I cut the largest piece of fabric about 1 1/2" wide and about 7" long.  I frayed one edge and used a running stitch along the other edge.  I then pulled the thread to make a ruffle and sewed the ends together.   I repeated the next layer out of different fabric cutting it just bit smaller than the first layer.  The top layer is made from the Black Tulle Ribbon gathered together.  It is all pulled together with a button from the Black Assortment.

To create my title I used our new Black Glitter paper.  I cut the word "LIVE" with the Artiste Cricut Cartridge and the word "life" with the Art Philosophy cricut cartridge.   I love how easy it was to cut the glitter paper and it was not messy at all!

The finishing touches to my layout were Sparkles Black Flourishes and I added a couple of strips of the Black Shimmer Trim with more buttons.
